Through to Illinois

It's been a while since my last update and there's much to tell, but I'll start with the biggest news: it appears that I'll be completing the ride by myself. A few days ago Fred left me on the side of the road and I haven't seen him since. So I suppose I'm going solo from here on out, which is fine. I'm in Urbana, IL, staying with my college friends John and Natalie. We're about to sit down to dinner, so I'll leave the details for later (don't worry, tomorrow is a rest day, you'll get a proper update soon). Here are some pics: yet another campsite sunset; crossing the Mississippi River; CORN!

Yeah, I read on his blog how he left you and I was wondering how you felt about that.

I'm sure your mom is gonna start worrying more now that you are on your own. :-)

matt! do you know when you will get to cincinnati? i am going to be gone sat (8/25) to mon (8/27) (in IL ironically) (is that ironic? that alanis morrisette song made me all paranoid that i was getting that wrong).

then i will be in NY 8/30 to 9/4. so you have to try to make it here sometime during the middle of next week! is that possible? i will look on the map.

ok it says it is 233 miles from urbana to here. so if you leave there on fri, then if you will get here on mon that would be perfect. that is like umm 60 miles/day. is that what you are doing? i can't really tell.

email or call and let me know if you get a chance. i am flexible on when i get back here on mon, i can leave my dad's house whenever i want. in fact i can pick you up on the way home if you happen to be splattered across the pavement somewhere... hahaha...

i think your friend, fred, is a jerk.
i don't know, maybe there's more to the story, and i hope there's a good reason behind his sudden abandonment of you on the side of the road.
but if there's not, perhaps he should get HIS mental health checked. (that's the cause he's riding for, right?)
good luck, matt!
stay strong, i'm sending good thoughts your way!

Matt-ra-doodle,

Weird things happen on road trips with friends. That's how it goes, sometimes. Things may yet work out with Fred. Compassion is the key. I bet he wishes he hadn't done what he did. I hope you two can patch it up.

But I know you'll have an amazing ride regardless of whether or not Fred is with you. You've already come so far! Enjoy your rest day and keep taking these amazing photos. The corn is a little impressive, but you need a picture of yourself next to a tacky roadside attraction. Perhaps a world's largest toenail clipping ball or something of that magnitude.

I deleted my earlier comment because it wasn't clear. What I meant to say was that maybe you are better off on your own, Matt, if your companion can't be relied upon. Maybe you'll make more phone calls now!

Oh, and please make sure to check conditions ahead of you in Ohio, where they have been having terrible, deadly flooding.

Hey, Matt - How come you didn't return Fred's phone calls? He was trying to get together with you after you two separated and finally gave up. I noticed you didn't mention that in your blog.
